This week the dominant story is Google's aggressive push into agentic AI at I/O 2026. The company rolled out Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default model for AI Mode in Search, introduced a completely redesigned AI-powered Search box (the biggest change in 25+ years), launched continuous "information agents" that monitor the web on your behalf, and debuted agentic coding tools via its new Antigravity platform.

Broader context: frontier labs are racing on reliability, security and cost. Anthropic just raised massive funding and released Claude Opus 4.8 (strong in coding), while critical vulnerabilities in open-source packages threaten millions of AI agents and companies are hitting unexpected token-cost walls.

Why this matters to South Africans: agentic systems could let local businesses, farmers and government departments automate routine work even with patchy connectivity or skills shortages — but only if we build the right local data, energy resilience and policy guardrails. South Africa's own AI policy is being completely redrafted after an embarrassing AI-hallucination scandal, creating a fresh window to shape rules that protect data sovereignty and create real opportunities for SA talent.

Google I/O 2026 – The Agentic Era Arrives in Search​

Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default behind AI Mode globally and gave Search its biggest redesign in a quarter-century. Anthropic raised enough capital to reach a ~$900 billion valuation (surpassing OpenAI's last mark) and shipped Claude Opus 4.8, which excels at "vibe coding" (conversational English → production code). The company also signalled an IPO for late 2026.

Why it matters globally: the competitive gap between the top labs is narrowing fast and coding agents are becoming real revenue drivers.
